Most of us spend our first four decades of life being taught how to conform to the systems of the world, in hope of being successful in life. However, around our forties or later, we realize that despite of our achievements, we feel stuck, unfulfilled and unable to joyfully amplify our impact. We lose our joie de vivre!
That was me! A few years back, I, Dr Bola Tafawa, thought I was living the life of my dreams. I was joyfully married with kids, had the best job flying business class around the world as a thought leader, and just built a $20Million portfolio that was helping African families live healthier lives. I had a corner office overlooking a gorgeous park, held meetings with famous clients and celebrities, and sat on an elected board to advise the Kenyan President about the health sector. The great paycheck was a bonus. My family was proud, and my friends approved!
But then, in the midst of board meetings and business travels, the deep feeling of unfulfillment was an unshakeable force, even to me! You see, I am a multi-faceted Maverick! With my Harvard-PhD, I spent decades leading corporate, governmental, civic/non-government organizations and academic teams to strategically build their brands and businesses in new ways. I worked in various sectors (including health, communications, agriculture, real-estate, education, and finance) across multiple countries in 3 continents.
I was so busy… slaving away at my responsibilities of being a great employee, a leader, advisory board member, wife, sister, daughter, mother of very young kids, mentor, managing my finances and household, running women’s groups and bible studies, leading small teams…the list of roles/titles was endless...that I didn’t realize I had lost myself. I had lived for several decades but had no clue who I really was!
What do you do when you’ve lost who you are in the midst of trying to succeed? As you know, loss, especially loss of self, is an excruciating mental hardship that could cost you everything. The next loss for me, was my job. I quit my “dream” job. Instead, I spent my time tracing back my steps and leaning forward into a journey to find myself.
I read numerous books about finding purpose and took various courses on “identity and leadership”, “self-discovery”, “hearing from God”, “inner healing”, “intimacy with God”, and “purpose and leadership” etc. I also pursued an intensive coaching program to help me master tools and learn proven systems that lead to self- transformation. My free time was spent bingeing on church, praying, fasting and crying while drinking wine as I pursued answers to who I am and why I am here.
I also started serving in church to rediscover my strengths and gifts. While serving, I realized I had a knack for helping ambitious women in their mid-life understand the root cause of their biggest problems and find confidence to birth their God-given dreams. Before, I knew it, I had coached 15 women in a couple of months and was getting more referrals than I could handle! I helped a corporate C-suite Executive change direction and joyfully start a new career. Another client was overwhelmed by her gifts in law and artificial intelligence and couldn’t figure out her next steps. I helped her connect to her values and purpose and she then went on to co-find a subsidiary in the largest law firm in Africa. Another client was stuck in the details of her God-given dream of re-imagining primary education in Africa. After my coaching sessions, she found renewed creativity and started her doctoral studies in teacher training and leadership.
While helping all these women, reinvent themselves by refocusing their energy inwards, I realized that just like them, the solutions to my feelings of being “unstuck” and unfulfilled was already in me. Helping people get clarity about their identity, conviction about their purpose and commitment to their very next mission was a big part of my purpose. I realized that the decades I spent conforming to succeed in life, without intimate knowledge of my identity, was a set-up for a restless and empty life.
After a lonely and treacherous journey, I finally got clarity, confidence and conviction about my God-given identity and purpose. My intimacy with God, and as an extension, my wisdom has also increased tremendously. With living in purpose, I know how to balance my multiple roles and responsibilities, authentically engage in relationships, quickly make informed decisions, embrace taking risks and starting new (profitable) business ventures and “joyfully-task” (instead of multi-task). I have also banished limiting-beliefs and fear, increased my ability to thrive though transitions, and gotten clarity about my worth and value. I know what I am supposed to be doing and whom I am to spend my time with.
Discovering, birthing and building my purpose gave me renewed confidence and courage to increase my income and impact. My mission- through “MzimaLife”- is to help other ambitious women- especially female corporate leaders and Momprenuers with multiple roles- find their identity and purpose. With their newfound clarity and courage, they can then realize how to utilize the right gifts in the right season and start living their very best life.
Mzima means “Abundance” and “Wholesome” in Swahili, an East-African language, spoken in Kenya, where I currently reside with my husband, our 4 homeschooled kids, and our chickens and rabbits.
